Style

Any look you want. From out of the box to totally custom.

What you are looking at is a basic out of the box default configuration of the web site. This layout has 3 columns.

The left column
Usually used for what are called  Portlets. Portlets are those small boxes of information to the left and right of the page. Currently, the left column has a navigation portlet enabled. If you are not logged-in, you will also see the login portlets. There are many pre-defined portlets and they can easily be enabled or disabled on a per page or folder basis. A new style is to eliminate the left column and have the main content start on the left.
The middle column
Usually contains the main content and so is the widest column.
The right column
More portlets. In this case you will see portlets for News, Events and an RSS feed from Forbes.com. If you are logged in, you might also see portlets for Recent Changes and Items for Review.

Customisation

The easiest most affordable option is to just change the logo and color scheme. This would probably be the desired option for a company intranet.

The next option might be something like: http://www.betsydaily.com. The site referenced has mild customisation yet the look is quite different.
